AT one time Banbridge was synonymous with ballroom
boxing, the Castle Ballroom having seen some fantastic bouts throughout the 60s.
So, in an attempt to raise the profile of local
boxing as well as some much-needed cash, Banbridge ABC are staging a top-class
tournament in the Coach nightclub on Thursday night (Jan 17).
In the two years that it has been opened,
Banbridge ABC has gone from strength to strength. With a wealth of young talent
coming through its doors, the club will use this as an opportunity to showcase
the best in underage boxing from all over Ireland.
The committee and all involved in the club have
worked hard to bring a fantastic bill together, with top clubs such as the
Immaculata Boxing Club (Belfast) taking part.
Boasting 10 Irish champions, there is no doubt
that the audience will get a real treat on the night. Clubs from Keady and
Dundalk have also come on board, which will give an eclectic taste of Ireland's
future boxing champions.
Club coach Nigel McBurney believes this will be
a fantastic night for local boxing and the sport in general: "The club is going
well and this will be a top-class bill," he said.
"It will be a great experience for our lads and
a great entertaining night for the audience."
The headline bill will see Lee Forsythe,
(Camlough) who is a four time Intermediate Irish Champion, face Tony Broadhurst
from Dealgan. Six fighters in total from Banbridge ABC will compete on Thursday
night, as well as two from Gilford.
John McKenna, who has been boxing for three
years, was apprehensive about his bout in the Coach.
"I am a bit nervous, and have been training
really hard," said John.
"I go running most nights and train three nights
at the club, so it is pretty intense. I also have to watch my diet in order to
make my weight."
Special guests on the night will include Eamon
McCusker, a former Olympian from the renowned St John Bosco Club, Gerry Storey
and Ireland's Olympic rep Paddy Barnes.
Quite a lot of tickets have already been sold
out, but the public can still pay at the door. Admission is £5 and proceedings
start at 8pm sharp.

KHAN is Our Man
OLYMPIC boxing medalist, Amir Khan, is to take time out of his Commonwealth title preparations to offer a few word of advice to the young members of Banbridge Amateur Boxing Club (ABC).
Khan, who won a silver medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, is due to fight Willie Limond for the vacant title belt at London’s 02 Arena on Saturday, July 14.
But, with his training schedule intensifying for his first big shot at a recognised title, Khan has found time to invite the Banbridge teenagers over to England for a sneak preview into the world of professional boxing.
The lucky group will be given ring-side seats to watch Khan in action in training and will be given some useful boxing tips by the world-famous Bolton lightweight.
The teenagers will then be given the chance to put some of these pointers into practise when they participate in a boxing dinner match against Khan’s own club – Bury Amateur Boxing Club.
The once in a lifetime opportunity has been pencilled in for June 22-24.
Club secretary, Paul Lyness, said the Scarva Road club was looking forward to the experience.
“All the guys are big fans of Amir, so they’re all really excited about going over to his gym in Bolton,” he said.
“They’re looking forward to getting some tips from him and putting them into practice against the Bolton guys on the Saturday night.
“They’ve been training very hard over the past month or two and have put in a lot of extra training on Saturdays and Sundays under the guidance of Coaches Paul Barr , Sean Duffy and Patsy Mc Conville"
The spotlight will certainly be on the talented Banbridge boxers. But Paul believes his young squad have the capabilities to perform on the big stage.
“Banbridge ABC feels privileged to be involved in this project,” he said.
“The experience will provide a good stepping stone for the guys and everyone should benefit from fighting at this high level.
Results of the fixture will be posted here .

Sam Storey Visits Club
Sam retired in 1997 and now trains some of the most promising fighters in Northern Ireland. After a glittering amateur career (which included a win over Steve Collins) the Belfastman turned pro in 1985. Storey reeled off 9 straight wins before Collins avenged his amateur defeat with a points victory in Boston for the Irish Middleweight title. Storey bounced back and won the vacant British Super Middleweight title.
Sam has taken a great interest in the Banbridge ABC and we welcome his ideas and passion for the sport
From all the members of Banbridge ABC , Thank You.
